Animating a Chart in PowerPoint - Sales Forecast

I’ve received a lot of requests to show how to do powerpoint animations.  These are fun and the possibilities are endless.

For example, at a sales kickoff meeting .. you may want to show the sales forecast for the next 4 quarters.  You could show a chart:

Or you could show them an animated chart …

To create the animation, start by creating the chart:

  • Insert, Chart

    Photobucket

  • Change the data sheet, [I added a sales forecast for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters.]

Photobucket

  • Add a Title to the chart, by right clicking on the chart, then selecting Chart Options from the menu

 Photobucket

  • Add the the Chart Title, and click OK

Photobucket

Change the Scale, so that the change in each bar is more pronounced.

  • Double click the Y Axis

 Photobucket

  • Change the scale minimum

Photobucket

Now your chart looks like this:

Now for the fun part … we will animate each bar.

First, Ungroup the chart (HINT: Make sure you are done editing … because the chart won’t work after you ungroup it)

  • Right click on the chart, click Grouping, Ungroup

Photobucket

Repeat above step and your chart will look like this:

 Photobucket

Next, you will want to regroup the bars.  Because our chart is in 3D, you will want to group all 3 pieces.

  • Hold the shift key, click on all 3 pieces.
  • Use your mouse to right click, select Grouping, select Group
  • Do this for each bar in the chart

 Photobucket

Now, you are ready to animate …

  • Hold the shift key and click on each bar
  • Use your mouse to right click
  • Select custom animation

Photobucket

  1. Click Add Effect
  2. Click Entrance
  3. Click Peek In  (Hint: You can choose any effect .. click more effects to see them all)

Change the timing of the bars:

  • Click on the down arrow
  • Click Timing
  • Select Start on Click … that way the presenter can talk before each bar’s animation
  • Another option would be to select “Start After Previous”
  • Delay:  add a 1 second delay between the bar animations
  •

Your chart is done … I saved this on the public Google Group: BusinessToolsBlog Shared Files if you want to check it out.
