Lesson I learned from Dad

My Dad’s quote:

Can’t just means you don’t want to

John David Machuca

When I was a kid, this quote inspired me to do things that I otherwise probably wouldn’t have done. When I was in 7th grade training for the 800 meter race.  My dad was with me every step of the way.  When I got tired, and said, “I can’t do this anymore.”  He said, “Can’t just means you don’t want to.”  He was right.  I kept training and eventually won blue ribbons in that event.  This quote forced me to decide if I wanted to win or not and gave me the belief that if I wanted to win, I could.

He used this quote at other times too, when I said, “I can’t figure out this trigonometry problem”  or “I can’t get my room clean.”  Occassionally that quote made me crazy … but it had a profound effect on how I approach problems.I’ve passed this message on to my kids, my husband, people who work for me, and vendors.  If you ever use the word “can’t” with me … you will hear my dad’s quote. Thanks Dad, and Happy Father’s Day!

  1. To Sandi Mays from her Dad,
What I remember is, Sandi taking on whatever challenges and not only succeeding but more importantly, exceeding expectations beyond whatever I imagined. I thought and believe to this day that this daughter of mine is truly unique and remarkable! Sandi, you are soaring beyond my wildest dreams. Without the words ‘can not’ in your vocabulary, you will continue to develop and grow wherever your talent and energy takes you.
I admire and learn from you, my daughter!
    Love,
    DAD
PS You make Father’s Day the best day of the year! Thanks! A million hugs and kisses to you!
