I am trying to learn as much as I can about digital marketing. I am listening to Seth Godin’s Meatball Sundae on audible. (I highly recommend.)
He discusses Old vs. New Marketing … where old marketing is about “Command and Control” approach to spreading ideas. Corporations tell us what to believe. BearonBusiness called it Marketing the Old Fashioned Way – I personally like the 95 White Persian Monkeys idea. In a nutshell, command and control meant that companies spread ideas through high priced ad campaigns, like … Oscar Meyer.
According to Seth Goding, “The New Marketing is about fashion and stories and permission and promises … it’s the sort of marketing that existed before money and corporations took over.”
This is a powerful shift in the way consumers interact with business. Corporations need to stop cold calling, spamming and sending direct mail. (This should be great news for the finance department, because those marketing tactics are spendy). Companies need to build a dialogue with customers. Spend more time listening, and less time trying to force their message.
