Don’t forget to say thank you

Tips from Samantha Samsel

I read Seth Godin’s post “Two Seconds

Sometimes, busy people need to remind themselves (and us) how busy they are by shaving off the last two seconds of what would otherwise be a pleasant interaction.

At a restaurant yesterday, the maitre d, who is paid to be busy, looked up our name in the reservations book and then said, “over there against the wall,” while he pointed. He repeated this approach with at least three other parties.

How much longer to say, “Welcome, we’ll be ready for you in just a second. Would you mind waiting over there please?” Amazingly, saying that while smiling takes precisely the same amount of time.

I know you’re busy, so I’ll keep this short… if you’re going to interact, spend a few extra beats to be calm and gracious. It’s hard to overstate how much better everyone will feel and how much more productive you’ll become as a result.

I agree and wanted to add that it’s always IMPORTANT to say thank you. Not just in your every day life, but in business.

Many people have worked hard to make your accomplishments possible. Many people donate their time to make your experiences possible. Some people you may know well, others you don’t know at all.  Most give their time and energy simply because they believe in you and/or believe in the company.

The longer you wait, the less meaningful it becomes.  No one is ever too busy or too important to say thank you.

Thank you. That’s all it takes!

  2. Thank you Sam!

We should re-post this blog every month as a reminder. I know when I’m really busy or in the middle of a crisis, I am not at my most considerate. I feel terrible about that. So a reminder is always welcome!
