When are you most likely to take your eye off the goal? In business your eye is most likely to wander when your prospects for the future are looking really good. When it seems like nothing can go wrong, you begin putting your energy into something new aka the shiny object. You assume that all of the processes that you put in place to watch your business and protect your downside are working. Then BANG!
Everything seems to go wrong all at once. Customers get angry. You find a mistake in your forecast. Several large deals that were “in the bag” fall through. What happened? You let day to day management take care of itself, and obstacles that would have been easily navigated become perceptively larger.
In this tough economic time its even more important to stay focused on operations. Don’t get too comfortable thinking that the economy won’t impact you.
