“I wish people would follow the standard format for naming files,” is a rant that I hear from people who have to share documents in public or semi-private folders/sites. I assume that most folks aren’t passive-aggressive, so perhaps the methodology for naming shared files just isn’t that well known.
For example, a file following the standard format would be:: “20081020ZBFinancialsv1.xls”
- Start with the year “2008“
- The the month “10“
- Then the date “20“
- Then a short name, no spaces or special characters “ZBFinancials“
- The a version “v1“
The file should start with a date - anyone sharing a file can sort and identify the most recent version.
The file should have a short name and no spaces or special characters - as we move to web based file sharing, we need to take into account issues that different web based programs have with spaces and special characters.
The version should be last - in case you save multiple versions of a file on the same day, anyone can sort and identify the most recent version.
