Stop using the word “but”

The word “but” makes me nuts.  OK, I really don’t have anything against the  word “but” - I just hate the unexpected zinger that comes immediately after the word “but”.

Now I am programmed, like Pavlov’s dog.  If I hear the word “but” I immediately tense, getting ready for the bad news.

  • I really like him, but …
  • I tried really hard, but …
  • We had a great time, but …
  • She does great work, but …

There is a time and place for this conjunction.  Just don’t use “but” as a drum roll before dropping a bomb.  If you “really liked him” you probably wouldn’t be willing to say something nasty about him after the word “but”.
