Because today is election day, I thought it would be appropriate to share a Commoncraft video that explains the electoral process in a fun, easy to understand way.
A candidate can win the popular vote and still lose an election. Why? Because whoever wins the popular vote for each state, gets 100% of the electoral college votes for that state. The bigger the state, the more this matters. For example, if John McCain wins the popular vote for the state of California by just 1 vote, he would get the benefit of all 55 of California’s electors - no pro-rating. If a candidate wins the popular vote in Colorado, they get 9 elector votes.
To win the presidential election, a presidential candidate needs 270 elector votes. Check out the Commoncraft video for a fun 3 minute explanation of how a US President is elected:
