Women in the Workforce - we haven’t come as far as we thought

Yesterday, BearonBusiness.com offerred 3 posts on work life imbalance.  And wow!  This is a topic that people feel really strongly about.  (Frankly, I don’t feel that stronly about the topic.  All I require for a great work environment is people I like to work with, a big challenge and clear direction)

But there is a post this week that was horrifying (play the Psycho music in the background when you read it). Daniel Lai’s Managing Women: From A Guy’s Perspective.  I tried not to be offended.  But based on his age, I determined that I should be lumped in with the older women he manages.

Here are a few of his tips:

The way you communicate and the way you delegate work needs to be changed up to match the woman. There’s no rhyme or reason. You just need to go with the flow to get the job done.

Older women love it! Opening doors, picking stuff up for them, letting them be first in and out of the elevator. It’s easy and it’s free.

Up the charm to up their work load. I have no shame! The best days are when these older ladies get their hair done. It’s like shooting fish in a barrel.

You have to be political… and sometimes a babysitter. This is probably what I hate the most. Women can be so caddy with each other. From the training bra to menopause it doesn’t really seem to change. Whenever you throw women into the mix you have to seriously manage relationships.

You might laugh, but this isn’t an old dog, set in his ways.  This is a GenY kid, on his first management gig.  He proves that we really haven’t come that far from the 1943 Guide to Hiring Women.

And it may very well be his last management position.  I Google everyone that I interview for a job.  If I Googled Daniel and read this post, I wouldn’t bring him in for an interview.

  1. Caddy… I laughed and pictured older women carrying golf clubs.
I hope he learns from the experience. People are understandably ripping him apart on the original blog. If he learns from it then great, otherwise like JF said, he’s gonna get a rude awakening.

  2. I think he was trying to be snarky … but believed he was offering useful advice. Tragic!

  3. Was that a serious post from that guy? Unbelievable. What a moron. I am embarrassed for him. I have to believe that he has a rude awakening about to hit him in the next 5yrs. Not sure from who but it is certainly coming. Yikes.
