Top 5 Free File Hosting Services

What do you do when you need to share a file, and your email administrator has put a limit on the file size that you can send or receive.  (Typically email caps out at 10-20MG).  You can share files using a free file hosting service.  Many of these have popped up since 2006, but I think my list is the best of the best.

How do these services work?

  • On the users end, it’s easy - upload your file, and the service returns a link that can be shared.
  • The Hosting Services listed below, use a feature called file mirroring.  This means that they take your file and transfer it to a Third Party Hosting Company.  The terms of use require that you abide by the third party hosting company’s terms and conditions.
  • Since they are free, these services support themselves with online advertising.

Make sure that you check the file expiration in the terms of use.  Many files are deleted after 7-90 days.

1. Rapidspread - unlimited file size

2. Massmirror - up to 1 GB

3. Filefactory - files up to 300MB, up to 25 files at a time

4. Sharebee - files up to 150 MB

5. UploadJockey - files up to 100MB

  2. One thing to note is that all of these companies use one form or another IP address filtering to keep any one user from making too many simulatnious requests (and thus over consuming bandwidth). The problem is when you’re using company machines with a common internet connection, and you get enough people using any one of these sites they can often block you because of the similarities between different users IP addresses, and the site’s filtering assumes that it is a single user monkeying arround with their IP.

May not be a problem for smaller companies like Zayo, but at my work it’s a very common problem.
