I watched the movie Eddie, where “Wild Bill” Burgess buys a losing basketball team and wants to increase attendance with bells and whistles like PR gimmicks, cheerleaders, and fireworks. Wild Bill stages an ‘honorary coach’ contest, which Eddie (Whoopi Goldberg) wins. The fans love it, the current head coach is fired and Whoopi becomes the coach. She takes the bunch of overpaid prima donnas that make up the team and turns them around.
The moral of the story … bells and whistles aren’t what people really want. They want to work for, invest in, and be fans of a winning team. Focus on what makes you win. Don’t be distracted by gimmicks, fireworks, and cheerleaders. They don’t make you win. In business, the same rule applies. Make sure what you are working on creates value.
