Don’t forget that Twitter is a Public Domain

Erick Schonfeld of TechCrunch found that out the hard way when Mahalo Answers Hijacked Twitter Questions from IMshopping.

What does that mean?

After Erick used Twitter to ask IMShopping for Mother’s Day Gift Ideas, answers started pouring in from Maholo … in enough abundance for Erick to come up with a new term - “Answer Spam.”  Erick says, “Mahalo Answers is stealing my question, isn’t it? … And there is an evil genius component involved which is admirable in its sheer audaciousness. Who steals somebody elses questions?”

Stealing questions on Twitter?  What will they think of next?

It’s a great reminder that Twitter is not the same as private Instant Messaging.  Unless you have a private profile, everything that you type is saved forever in the public domain.  Remind your kids.  When your children run for public office in 2020, you don’t want silly Tweets haunting them on the campaign trail.
