Strange - Hyphenation is not a default in Microsoft Word.
If you want Microsoft Word to hyphenate your document - select Tools > Language > Hyphenation
Select:
Automatically hyphenate document
Hyphenate words in CAPS
Hyphenation Zone: “.25″ (the default setting of 25 percent is adequate for most uses)
Limit consecutive hyphens to: “No Limit”
