How to change default fonts and print settings in Excel

Questions from John Fontana ….

  • I would LOVE to figure out how to pre-set my Excel footers with date and time on the left bottom of the page and filename on the bottom right.
  • Further, I hate Times Roman script and for business documents try to standardize my files with Arial 11 or 12pt font so would want my files to default to Arial and secondly have my footers also default to Arial 8pt font.
Answer:
You can handle both of these by creating a template.  Just start with a blank workbook, save all the settings that you want (font, print, column width, headers/footers) and then “Save as type” = Template (*.xlt).

The file will save in your Microsoft Templates folder.

You will have to close the template before you can use it.

Whenever you create a new Excel workbook,

  • Click File > New  (Don’t click the New Icon or CTRL+N)
  • On the New Workbook Task pane, select “On my Computer” in the Template section
  • Select the template that you just saved, and the new workbook will open with all your pre-defined settings
* If you just want to change the fonts, you can change the default on the Options Menu, Found under Tools in Microsoft 2003.
  • On the General tab, select your font of choice in the Standard font box.
  • Select the size in the Size box
  • Restart Microsoft Excel for the font options to take effect
