Sorting in any order you want, not alphabetical or numerical

Have you ever needed to sort a list in a certain order vs. alphabetical or numerical?  Believe it or not, you can do this in Excel … you just need to create a custom list first.

For this example, I want to sort my regions in the below order vs. alphabetical:

Step 1 is to create a custom list.  Under Excel Options, Select Popular, then select “Edit Custom Lists…”

Step 2 is to add your list.  You can either type the list in the order you want to sort, or you can import the list from somewhere in your spreadsheet.  Then click Add.

Step 3 - When you are ready to sort, select “Custom Sort”, and select your list in the Order column as shown below.
