What is EPUB? Can you use it on the Kindle?

“.epub” allows publishers to produce and distribute a ‘digital publication’ file and offer consumers interoperability between software and hardware for unencrypted reflowable digital books.  Google offers its books in .epub which doesn’t work on the Kindle.

Watching the Google/Sony ebook reader vs. Amazon/Kindle vs. Barnes and Noble/Nook has been crazy!

In case you missed it Google/Sony are working the “free” book angle (big surprise).  Google offers over 1 million free titles vs. the Kindle which offers 300,000 paid titles.  Unfortunately, you won’t find the NY Times bestsellers on Google’s free list and Google/Sony device is lacking cool features that the Kindle offers.  But don’t count Google out … it’s round 1 and they’ve already made a compelling pitch.

If you already own the Kindle here’s some good news.  You can use free conversion tools - mobigen, mobipocket reader, and calibre to convert ePub to MOBI format which is totally compatible with the Kindle format - it’s the same as the Kindle format except for some identifying information.  Calibre keeps the styling the best (and has a lot of customizable options, including generating a table of contents).   You can also download MOBI books direct to Kindle by going tofeedbooks.commnybks.net, and www.fictionwise.com/help/kindleFaq.htm as well as directly from Project Gutenberg.

Stay tuned …
