How to Password Protect an Excel File

What if you want to add files to Google Groups or another shared forum and you only want certain people to be able to open them?  Or, what if you want to make sure no one accidentally changes your numbers?

It’s easy to password protect Excel files.

On the “Save As” menu, select Tools > General Options

  • If you want only people with Passwords to open the file, type a Password in “Password to Open”
  • If you want anyone to be able to open, but only people with Passwords to be able to modify, type a Password in “Password to Modify”
  • If you want to remind users that modifying should be done cautiously, check the “Read-only recommended” box

Photobucket

Now your file is password protected.

CAUTION: This is NOT full proof.  There are programs that remove these passwords.
